Room6@Sunnyhills

We loved making pizza with our buddy class on Friday last week. It was a great opportunity for us to share our knowledge of fractions with our buddies as well as test our knowledge of doubling ratios and fractions. The best part was eating the pizza of course!

Room 6 had a fantastic kick off to Māori Language week! We enjoyed an exciting lesson with Mrs Harding in the Green Room about pronouncing Māori words correctly, learning Māori words for everyday items and learning the days of the week. We can't wait to practice everything that we learnt today and learn even more in Te Reo during the rest of the week. Ko te aha tēnei rā? (What day is this?) Rāhina - Monday Rātū - Tuesday Rāapa - Wednesday Rāpare - Thursday Rāmere - Friday Rāhoroi - Saturday Rātapu - Sunday Ko te Rāhina tēnei rā! (It is Monday!)

To help us understand and apply our knowledge of simple fractions in everyday life, we created some fraction pizzas for our maths wall. The teacher gave us instructions on how to create our own personal pizzas. It was so much fun!                                                          

Betsy had an amazing time with our class mascot Flash over the holidays. She enjoyed having him so much that she made a short video to show some of the things they got up to. What an awesome video Betsy!

On Monday, we looked back at some of the amazing things we have been learning and achieving in room 6 in term 2. Miss Stuhlmann wrote most of our learning intentions on the board (she ran out of room for all of them) and we reflected on how well we did at each of those learning goals. We have started thinking about some of our work that we would like to share with our parents and put our Sunnyhills Share and Shine GEM to light during the three way conferences. We can't wait! This week was amazing. We were encouraged to walk to school for Road Safety Week and, to make each and everyday exciting, students who walked to school were allowed to dress up and be creative. On Monday we saw lots of colourful and funny Super Hats! Tuesday brought us extra Funky Feet. When Wednesday came around, we were wowed with the Wacky, Crazy Hair. On Thursday, Miss Stuhlmann was very surprised to find so many Twins and Triplets in her class! Finally, on Friday, the WHOLE school embarked on a fabulous walk to the Pakuranga Sailing Club. We had so much fun dressing up and embracing walking to school. I hope that even after Road Safety Week is done, we can keep up the walking.

Last week, we looked at a picture maths problem. We used logical reasoning and problem solving to figure out what each picture was worth and then work out the last equation. We found many ways that we could solve the bottom question and discussed the mathematical strategies for each. In the end we all agreed on one strategy and one answer. This morning Room 6 got comfortable and continued reading our Chapter Chat book 'Wonder'. Wonder is about a young boy who was born without a cleft palate and from this has needed to have a lot of surgeries to try and correct his face. He is starting school for the first time and must over come new challenges like making friends. We are learning all about being kind and helping others to fit in as well as reading strategies such as making connections to the text, building inferences, using prior knowledge and asking and answering questions about the book. We are now creating our own New York subway stations that one of the characters use to get to and from school. We are all very excited and can't wait to share our finished products!            

It was such an awesome opportunity for the year fives to listen to the school leader applicants present their speeches on Monday. I was blown away by every single students speech. We heard that being a school leader means being a leader rather than being a boss, helping others, being kind and responsible and much much more. I was very proud to see so many ex-room six students present speeches and I know that the current room six students feel very inspired to do their absolute best, apply for leadership roles when they can and be great role models for the school after listening to these speeches. I can't wait to hear who our school leaders will be! They will be announced at the Kauri Assembly this Friday!!!

Room 6 had an amazing time at their EOTC days. Our first day at Eastern Beach was organised and run by the wonderful Auckland Council staff and they ensured that we were all having fun and learning new skills. Our second day was at Vector Wero Water-park where we got to experience white water rafting in a safe environment with well trained staff. A huge THANK YOU to all of the fantastic parents who came to help us on these days. You made them extra special for us! Hello new room 6 students. I hope you have all had amazing, adventurous, interesting, exciting and relaxing holidays and are now ready and excited to start term one (I know I am). I can't wait to hear what you have all been up to over the break, I hope you can all bring 2-3 memories to share with the class. On Friday the teachers and staff of Sunnyhills went out on the Ted Ashby from the Maritime Museum. It was a wonderful day. Check out the pictures below.
