Creative Chaos?

Image
This morning Room 6 got comfortable and continued reading our Chapter Chat book 'Wonder'. Wonder is about a young boy who was born without a cleft palate and from this has needed to have a lot of surgeries to try and correct his face. He is starting school for the first time and must over come new challenges like making friends. We are learning all about being kind and helping others to fit in as well as reading strategies such as making connections to the text, building inferences, using prior knowledge and asking and answering questions about the book. We are now creating our own New York subway stations that one of the characters use to get to and from school. We are all very excited and can't wait to share our finished products!

Breaking Records

Image
Room 6 is working through another glorious school kit. This one is designed to test our measurement skills, creativity and data displaying skills. This kit is all about creating and breaking world records! We have been very excited exploring different world records on guinnessworldrecords.com and discussing the different types of measurements used. We created a record 'The fastest average score when clicking on a mouse pad with your left hand on humanbenchmark.com while standing on your right foot in milliseconds' and challenged each other to beat it. It was a lot of fun to try to improve our own scores, work out the averages and compare results. Next, we are going to be coming up with more original world records and testing them as a class. We can't wait!

Showing MANA

Image
Room 6 is a class filled with students who all work hard to live with Mana and display the Mana GEM. We strive to make positive contributions to class, group and play time discussions, we represent Sunnyhills with pride when we use our manners and wear our uniform correctly, we always celebrate our own and each others achievements no matter how small and we always endeavor to do our best in everything we do.  Today we were excited to celebrate Pasindu's success in modelling these values of the Mana gem and last whole school assembly we were very proud of Brodie and celebrated her success in displaying this too!

The Great Maths Challenge

Image
This morning Mrs Madden email the Sunnyhills teachers a mathematical challenge to try with our students. At first, we though the answer was straight forward but after calculating and re-calculating we realised it would not be as easy as we thought.  We pulled out lots of materials (plastic cubes, blocks, counters and tens blocks) to help us try to understand and solve this challenge. After much brainpower and with the help of our classmates (and teacher) we managed to solve the challenge. So now, WE CHALLENGE YOU! See if you are able to find the numbers to go in each square and comment your answers below. We will let you know if you are right or if you need to try again.

Get New Zealand Writing

Image
We signed up for the Get New Zealand Writing school kit which has amazing ideas and resources to help us develop our writing skills. So far room 6 has been working extremely hard to create a wonderful colour poem. We investigated what makes a great sentence and challenged ourselves to include nouns, adjectives, adverbs, verbs and similes! I think we have done an amazing job, what do you think?

School Leaders Speeches

Image
It was such an awesome opportunity for the year fives to listen to the school leader applicants present their speeches on Monday. I was blown away by every single students speech. We heard that being a school leader means being a leader rather than being a boss, helping others, being kind and responsible and much much more. I was very proud to see so many ex-room six students present speeches and I know that the current room six students feel very inspired to do their absolute best, apply for leadership roles when they can and be great role models for the school after listening to these speeches. I can't wait to hear who our school leaders will be! They will be announced at the Kauri Assembly this Friday!!!

EOTC Rocked!

Image
Room 6 had an amazing time at their EOTC days. Our first day at Eastern Beach was organised and run by the wonderful Auckland Council staff and they ensured that we were all having fun and learning new skills. Our second day was at Vector Wero Water-park where we got to experience white water rafting in a safe environment with well trained staff. A huge THANK YOU to all of the fantastic parents who came to help us on these days. You made them extra special for us! Check out our slideshow with pictures for these days here and go to the Sunnyhills Facebook page for more.
