Merry Christmas, Merry Merry Christmas!

Image
Room 6 has had a wonderful time learning together this year. We have made so many leaps and bounds academically, emotionally and physically. To close off the year, we made a celebration Christmas dance. We hope you love it!

Kiwi Kids Cafe - Passion Project

Image
Room 6 is embarking on a new inquiry unit... Passion Projects! These individual projects will delve into something that we are passionate about combined with something that we dislike or are worried about to create a solution for what we are worried about. First we talked about what is passion. We decided that passion is when you love something and you are dedicated to giving your all to that thing. For instance, Poppy loves horses and horse riding. It is her passion and she dedicates as much time as she can to improving her skills as a horse rider. Then we created some wonderings about a topic we are passionate about... After that, we motivated and empowered ourselves with this Kid President video. Now, we are planning at the planning phase of our passion projects. We are creating a driving question that we can research, create a product for and then present what we have done in week 8. Sound exciting? We think so! Watch out for more blogs about our passions!

A Day of being a Parent

Image
Wooooooooh today was a very tiring day. We had our own 'babies' to look after and boy was it hard work. We made sure to work with our co-parent to look after, feed, change and entertain our babies for a whole day at school. It was hard to multi-task sometimes! We have a new found appreciation for all that our own parents have done and do for us. Here are some photos from our day.

Co-Parents For The Day

Image
In room 6 we are experiencing what it is like to be parents. As part of our Keeping Ourselves Safe unit we are learning how to look not only after ourselves but after others. Miss Stuhlmann will play a simulated cry during the day to signal that the baby needs to be feed, changed, burped and played with. Let's see how we do as parents for the day.

Being Creative

Image
Last week on Friday, we explored creating art with pastels. We blended a multitude of colours to make the background and then we cover it completely with black pastel. After that, we scratched off the black pastel to make wonderful and eye catching designs.  What do you think of our designs?

PTA Art

It's that time of year again when we start thinking about buying calendars for 2020! I can't believe how fast 2019 has gone. The students of room 6 have worked very hard to create some amazing pieces of art that you can now buy printed on calendars, mouse pads and so much more.  Your learner went home with a notice of how to buy these awesome pieces of art on Tuesday afternoon.  Check out some of the art here:

Pizza Making With Our Buddies

We loved making pizza with our buddy class on Friday last week. It was a great opportunity for us to share our knowledge of fractions with our buddies as well as test our knowledge of doubling ratios and fractions. The best part was eating the pizza of course!

Maori Language Week

Image
Room 6 had a fantastic kick off to Māori Language week! We enjoyed an exciting lesson with Mrs Harding in the Green Room about pronouncing Māori words correctly, learning Māori words for everyday items and learning the days of the week. We can't wait to practice everything that we learnt today and learn even more in Te Reo during the rest of the week. Ko te aha tēnei rā? (What day is this?) Rāhina - Monday Rātū - Tuesday Rāapa - Wednesday Rāpare - Thursday Rāmere - Friday Rāhoroi - Saturday Rātapu - Sunday Ko te Rāhina tēnei rā! (It is Monday!)

Walk the Length of New Zealand?!!

Image
This term, for maths, we are looking into measurement and fractions. We have signed up for a wonderful School Kit unit called "Walk the Length of New Zealand". This kit allows us to explore all of the different units of measurement and how to convert them into each other. So far, we have found out our own personal average step lengths so that we can see how many steps we would have to take to walk the length of New Zealand.  Next we are going to explore perimeters and how to calculate these. We will then convert the perimeter calculations into our own personal steps. For instance; how many steps will it take Jenuli to walk around the netball courts compared to Johnathan? What do you think? Have a guess and type it into the comments. How many steps will Jenuli need to take to walk around our netball courts and how many steps will Johnathan need to take? Who will take the most steps?

Reading Strategies

Image
The Bears reading group have been working really hard to extend their skimming and scanning skills when reading. This week, we read the story called "Police Work" which is all about different people applying to be an undercover police person. We skimmed and scanned the applications to see what the important details were in each application. We then used the important details to help us make our own police job applications. What do you think? Can you see what the important details are from reading our applications?

Tree Planting

Thank you to all of the parents who came with us, last week Wednesday, to help us plant trees at Pigeon Mountain. We all had an amazing time getting into the mud and dirt and being out in the fresh air. Check out some of our favourite photos.

Ball Skills with our Buddies

We love seeing our buddy class, room 13, on Fridays. It is a wonderful time for us to practice our leadership skills and empower ourselves to be great role models for the younger students of Sunnyhills. Last Friday we took our buddies out onto the courts to practice our ball skills. We taught our buddies how to catch, throw, kick and stop with different balls. We can't wait to see them again!

Teach the Teacher

Pizza Fractions?

Image
To help us understand and apply our knowledge of simple fractions in everyday life, we created some fraction pizzas for our maths wall. The teacher gave us instructions on how to create our own personal pizzas. It was so much fun!

Fractions, Fractions Everywhere!

Image
This term in maths, we are learning about fractions, percentages, ratios and decimals. We are super excited to apply all of the addition and subtraction knowledge we learnt in term 1 as well as the multiplication and division knowledge we gained in term 2 to solving fraction, percentage, ratio and decimal problems. We started by discussing what we already knew about fractions - and we already know a lot. Have a look at our word art to see the mathematical language we know around fractions.

Flash's Whereabouts

Betsy had an amazing time with our class mascot Flash over the holidays. She enjoyed having him so much that she made a short video to show some of the things they got up to. What an awesome video Betsy!

Arts Week Is Here!

Image
We have been working hard in room 6 to complete our amazing cushion art and we hope that you come and take a look during three way conferences! See you in the hall soon.

Where in the world do our visitors come from?
