Fun With Shapes

Image
This week we have started looking at 2D shapes. We have been learning new shapes, discussing the angles within them and using some geometrical language to talk about them. Then, to apply our new knowledge, we have started to create shape comics! Check out how we are going.

Wow! What a Week!!!

Image
This week was amazing. We were encouraged to walk to school for Road Safety Week and, to make each and everyday exciting, students who walked to school were allowed to dress up and be creative. On Monday we saw lots of colourful and funny Super Hats! Tuesday brought us extra Funky Feet. When Wednesday came around, we were wowed with the Wacky, Crazy Hair. On Thursday, Miss Stuhlmann was very surprised to find so many Twins and Triplets in her class! Finally, on Friday, the WHOLE school embarked on a fabulous walk to the Pakuranga Sailing Club. We had so much fun dressing up and embracing walking to school. I hope that even after Road Safety Week is done, we can keep up the walking.

Can We Divide?

Image
On Monday, Room 6 used Math Talk Moves to get us thinking about all of the different strategies we know to solve Division. Miss Stuhlmann wrote 80/4 on the whiteboard and then gave us time to think about all the different ways we could solve the problem. When then took turns to share our strategies to the class and have a discussion about which ones we use the most and which ones we would like to learn. We came up with: - Equal sharing using skip counting - Halving and then halving again - Splitting factors - Reversibility (using multiplication instead) - Place Value - Short division Miss Stuhlmann also introduced us to Equal halving. Come and ask one of the room 6 students to explain how to use these strategies, we love to share our knowledge.

Eskimo Maths?!

Image
Last week, we looked at a picture maths problem. We used logical reasoning and problem solving to figure out what each picture was worth and then work out the last equation. We found many ways that we could solve the bottom question and discussed the mathematical strategies for each. In the end we all agreed on one strategy and one answer. See if you can solve this picture problem and comment your answers below!

Field of Dreams Swimming Lessons

Image
Our first swimming lesson at Lloyd Elsmore is done and dusted and we LOVED it. Thank you to the amazing instructors who tested our abilities to put us into special groups and then started to teach us awesome swimming skills.  Some words to sum up our experience are: fun, free-style, loud, crazy, awesome, sparkling, inspirational, splashing, wet and swimming.

ANZAC Poem

Image
Today in Reading we looked at an ANZAC poem and analysed the language features that we could find. We also made inferences about what each section means. After this, we created an ANZAC themed background and wrote the poem on top. They look like badges of honour.

Where in the world do our visitors come from?
