Reading Strategies

Image
The Bears reading group have been working really hard to extend their skimming and scanning skills when reading. This week, we read the story called "Police Work" which is all about different people applying to be an undercover police person. We skimmed and scanned the applications to see what the important details were in each application. We then used the important details to help us make our own police job applications. What do you think? Can you see what the important details are from reading our applications?

ANZAC Poem

Today in Reading we looked at an ANZAC poem and analysed the language features that we could find. We also made inferences about what each section means. After this, we created an ANZAC themed background and wrote the poem on top. They look like badges of honour.

Creative Chaos?

This morning Room 6 got comfortable and continued reading our Chapter Chat book 'Wonder'. Wonder is about a young boy who was born without a cleft palate and from this has needed to have a lot of surgeries to try and correct his face. He is starting school for the first time and must over come new challenges like making friends. We are learning all about being kind and helping others to fit in as well as reading strategies such as making connections to the text, building inferences, using prior knowledge and asking and answering questions about the book. We are now creating our own New York subway stations that one of the characters use to get to and from school. We are all very excited and can't wait to share our finished products!
