Pizza Making With Our Buddies

We loved making pizza with our buddy class on Friday last week. It was a great opportunity for us to share our knowledge of fractions with our buddies as well as test our knowledge of doubling ratios and fractions. The best part was eating the pizza of course!

Walk the Length of New Zealand?!!

Image
This term, for maths, we are looking into measurement and fractions. We have signed up for a wonderful School Kit unit called "Walk the Length of New Zealand". This kit allows us to explore all of the different units of measurement and how to convert them into each other. So far, we have found out our own personal average step lengths so that we can see how many steps we would have to take to walk the length of New Zealand.  Next we are going to explore perimeters and how to calculate these. We will then convert the perimeter calculations into our own personal steps. For instance; how many steps will it take Jenuli to walk around the netball courts compared to Johnathan? What do you think? Have a guess and type it into the comments. How many steps will Jenuli need to take to walk around our netball courts and how many steps will Johnathan need to take? Who will take the most steps?

Pizza Fractions?

Image
To help us understand and apply our knowledge of simple fractions in everyday life, we created some fraction pizzas for our maths wall. The teacher gave us instructions on how to create our own personal pizzas. It was so much fun!

Fractions, Fractions Everywhere!

Image
This term in maths, we are learning about fractions, percentages, ratios and decimals. We are super excited to apply all of the addition and subtraction knowledge we learnt in term 1 as well as the multiplication and division knowledge we gained in term 2 to solving fraction, percentage, ratio and decimal problems. We started by discussing what we already knew about fractions - and we already know a lot. Have a look at our word art to see the mathematical language we know around fractions.

Learning Long Division

Image
The Rectangles math group has begun to learn how to use long division to solve division problems. We worked on the mat today and discussed how we can make dividing as easy as possible. We know that the first step is to be able to take away the biggest tidy chunk by using our multiplication facts. After that, we know that we can keep doing this until we get to a number that is in our basic facts knowledge. We also know that we need to record how many times the number we are dividing by goes into the number under the division symbol on top of the division symbol. Check out our awesome working out.

Fun With Shapes

Image
This week we have started looking at 2D shapes. We have been learning new shapes, discussing the angles within them and using some geometrical language to talk about them. Then, to apply our new knowledge, we have started to create shape comics! Check out how we are going.

Can We Divide?

Image
On Monday, Room 6 used Math Talk Moves to get us thinking about all of the different strategies we know to solve Division. Miss Stuhlmann wrote 80/4 on the whiteboard and then gave us time to think about all the different ways we could solve the problem. When then took turns to share our strategies to the class and have a discussion about which ones we use the most and which ones we would like to learn. We came up with: - Equal sharing using skip counting - Halving and then halving again - Splitting factors - Reversibility (using multiplication instead) - Place Value - Short division Miss Stuhlmann also introduced us to Equal halving. Come and ask one of the room 6 students to explain how to use these strategies, we love to share our knowledge.

Eskimo Maths?!

Image
Last week, we looked at a picture maths problem. We used logical reasoning and problem solving to figure out what each picture was worth and then work out the last equation. We found many ways that we could solve the bottom question and discussed the mathematical strategies for each. In the end we all agreed on one strategy and one answer. See if you can solve this picture problem and comment your answers below!

Breaking Records

Image
In room 6 for the last four weeks we have been using an amazing kit to help us develop our knowledge about Statistics and Measurement. We have researched what it takes to create a world record, created our own records and now we are testing and challenging them. While we are testing our records we are using lots of mathematical language, measuring things using the metric system, converting measurements, collecting data, organising data, analysing data and soon we will be presenting and displaying data. We are having so much fun working with friends and using our Sunnyhills GEMS to help us create our world records. Check out some of the photos from today!

Where in the world do our visitors come from?
